RBG

Updated: Oct 1, 2018

"I ask no favors for my sex... all I ask of our brethren is that they take will take their feet from off our necks." A quote from Sarah Moore Grimke and often quoted by Ruth Bader Ginsberg, a quote she held near and dear to her heart through her life journey.

Sometimes, the least likely person to become a millennial pop culture icon becomes the face of a movement. Like Ruth Bader Ginsberg who is described by a director of the new documentary "RBG" as an “85-year-old Jewish grandmother who is speaking truth to power,” in a USA today article.

RBG has had numerous achievements over the years, starting with graduating from Cornell university in 1954, to entering into Harvard Law School in 1956, one of seven women in her class to do so. She recalls that she was asked how she felt about taking a spot in the class that otherwise a man might have had … which leads into her work now. She started American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Women’s Rights Project and was nominated by President Bill Clinton to the Supreme Court in 1993.

For a quick glance at RBG’s life look here, at CNN’s timeline. She was born in (where and what year). She lost her mother when she was only seventeen. Through the devastation of losing her mother, RBG never forgot the lessons her mother taught her.

RBG has written a book called "In My Own Words" and she speaks to Gwen Ifill on

NewsHour Bookshelf, PBS, to discuss the book, how her husband influenced and propelled her career and the differences in nomination process for Supreme Court Justices today versus when she was nominated.

RBG is best known for her blistering dissenting opinions and her tireless fight for women’s and minority’s rights and her time in the spotlight began when a law student published a blog about one of RBG’s dissenting opinions and called her “Notorious RBG” a clever play on “Notorious B.I.G”, a rapper who also grew up in Brooklyn.

Now, RBG’s face is on coffee mugs, bags and t-shirts all of which you can buy here, and RBG has become the face of many memes and is the center of a documentary “RBG” and subject of a movie coming out November 9th, On The Basis of Sex.

I highly recommend looking up RBG's dissenting opinions and going to see both the documentary "RBG" and the movie, "On the Basis of Sex". Comment your thoughts below!
