Sometimes all you want to do at the end of a long week is sit on the couch with a bag of popcorn and watch a good movie. I love watching brand new movies that are just getting released, but I enjoy watching movies on my couch more. I love movies that make me think, laugh or both. Usually both! Mostly both. It can be really entertaining to watch a movie about something you are passionate about, either to learn something or to laugh at how unrealistic it is. Some of my favorites happen to be ones that have some aspect of law (however big or small) tied into them and I wanted to give you all a list of a few.
1. To Kill A Mockingbird
In this movie, based on the book by Harper Lee an attorney named Atticus Finch refuses to stoop to the level of the era’s blatant racist thinking. Spurning the notion that a crippled African American man was guilty of rape simply because a lonely white woman accused him of it. Grapple with your convictions and see how morals have a place in the courtroom. You can watch Atticus Finch’s closing statement above.
2. Legally Blonde
I mean, obviously. Which list of movies would be complete without referencing the infamous Elle Woods on her journey from poolside LA to Harvard law. In this hilarious comedy, you will watch Elle Woods prove time and time again that blondes just do it better. If you want to watch the best part in the whole movie, just click here to watch a 2:39 second scene. There is also a Legally Blonde 2, Legally Blonde 3 and Legally Blonde the Musical.
3. The Judge
This is one of my favorite movies of all times. I love Robert Downey Jr. so this one is a no brainer. The stellar cast is packed with Robert Duvall, Vera Farmiga and Billy Bob Thorton. In this movie, an estranged son comes home for his mother’s funeral when his father is charged with a murder. This son, Hank Palmer (Robert Downey Jr.) is a defense attorney and he sets out to clear his father’s name. As he gets closer to the truth, he also gets closer to the family he left behind so long ago. You can take a peak at the trailer posted above!
4. Chicago
This is a musical, one of my favorite musicals actually. It is filled with singing, dancing and more than a little corruption. IMDb summarizes the film in a perfect sentence, it’s all about “two death-row murderesses [who] develop a fierce rivalry while competing for publicity, celebrity, and a sleazy lawyer’s attention”. It has won 6 Oscars, 51 other awards and has 128 nominations. You can watch it on Prime video for $3.99.
Next time you so desperately need a night to relax, unwind and reset think about choosing one of these movies to keep you company. Grab some chocolate, popcorn and a drink. Sink onto the couch and decompress and let the screen take you to a fictional world.
