A quick little peek into the life of a pre-law student, Sydney Wilson.
Sydney Wilson is a member of the University of South Dakota Soccer Team. She is in her fourth and final season as a Yote. She plays defense and says that this season is a bitter-sweet one. Looking back on all of the memories she has made, and the life-long friends she has found in her teammates, but also looking ahead with such excitement about what comes next... law school.
Sydney says that soccer has prepared her well for law school, showing her how to manage her time efficiently, work hard and dedicate herself to something she is passionate about, while also learning to go with the flow through the good and bad times.
I first med Sydney in a class taught by Dr. Roche and we bonded over mutually fighting despair that we might, actually, fail a class for the first times in our lives (don't worry, we didn't). As we began discussing more than just surface level conversation, how soccer practices were going, if I was dying in track, we realized we had quite a few things in common.
We both share a love for competition and fighting for the underdog. This led us to interning at the Minnehaha Public Defender's Office in Sioux Falls this summer. We discussed rights of the accused, bounced ideas off of one another on how our justice system can be better, do more and what we can do to fight for justice. Car rides back and forth from Sioux Falls began a deep friendship that I will always cherish.
This summer Sydney and I also took the LSAT together, again, discussing the threat of imminent destruction upon us (and yet again, we survived unscathed and live for another day). Now we are both in the process of applying to Law School. Finding people to write recommendation letters, editing each other's personal statements and meeting at the Bean to fill out Law School applications.
One of the things I admire most about Sydney is her drive to succeed at something she is so passionate about. She is dedicated to doing her best, no matter what the obstacles. She has found her passion within the law, and wants to seek justice and fairness. Sydney is doing all of this while successfully loving on people and her cute puppy Callie.
The point of this blog post? Find friends who inspire you and push you to do what you're passionate about. Love them fiercely, let them challenge you and don't compete against each other, take on life together.
